Downtown Plano — about a square mile of old-fashioned street lamps, cobblestone streets and family-owned business that manages to feel both small-town and urban at the same time — was named Thursday as one of the four best neighborhoods in the country.

The revitalization of the area started when DART came and put downtown Plano on the map.
Regulars who eat and work there say there’s an appeal in having dozens of restaurants and cute shops — from the coveted Lockhart Smokehouse to a barber shop that’s been there for 46 years — as well as a place to live within walking distance of a transit station.
The collaboration of stakeholders, including city planning staff, the Historic Downtown Plano Association and downtown merchants, is largely responsible for driving the area’s urban growth.
